Rimonabant and diabetes

Obesity has reached staggering proportions in United States. Over 60 percent of Americans are considered overweight or obese. In the last two decades, obesity among adults and children has increased nearly 50 percent.

With the incense of obesity among adult population there is a significant increase of obesity related diseases. Researchers from American Centre for Decease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that rates of type 2 adult diabetes have tripled in the last 30 years. The most significant proof of the link between type 2 diabetes and obesity is the fact that 97% of all patients suffering from this disease are obese or overweight.

Besides from causing diabetes, obesity also complicates the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes and can even lead to the body developing a resistance to insulin. This is why all obese patients, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, are recommended to weight loss immediately. Weight loss itself lowers elevated blood glucose levels found in diabetes patients. Studies involving patients who lost weight after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have proven the link between obesity and diabetes. These studies found that:

• Weight loss accomplished by lifestyle modification reduces blood glucose levels and HbA1c in some patients with type 2 diabetes.
• Decrease in abdominal fat will improve glucose tolerance in obese patients with impaired glucose tolerance.
• Evidence that increased levels of cardiorespiratory fitness improves glucose tolerance in overweight individuals with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes
• Weight loss achieved by weight loss medication improves blood glucose levels in the same manner as weight loss accomplished by any other means in overweight people with or without type 2 diabetes.
