Rimonabant; Is it Good or Bad for You?

The incidence of obesity and anorexia coincides with the availability of food, obesity being conspicuously absent during famine. It is a serious condition in affluent cultures chiefly because of the abundance of food and the decreased amount of physical activity.

During the past 10 to 15 years, there has been a rapid increase in the prevalence of obesity and anorexia in many Western countries. More and more children are faced with the problem of obesity and anorexia. More likely, this is not only the problem of the children but of the parents and the community as well. Blame it to “coca-colonization” which entices the children to eat more junk food and “Nintendo-nization” which encourages the children to just sit in front of the television or computer instead of playing outdoors. With these kind of lifestyle, no wonder more and more children, and even adults, are becoming obese and anorexic.

Tremendous advances have taken place over the last five years in the drug treatments of anorexia and obesity. Yet what has been achieved is merely the tip of the iceberg; much more research will be needed before a cure can be proclaimed for any of obesity and anorexia. Current treatments are aimed at ameliorating the symptoms of obesity and anorexia rather than targeting the underlying causes. Except for a few treatments for specific disorders, current available drug treatments such as Rimonabant are used across most types of obesity cases.

The Rimonabant drug, an anorectic anti-obesity drug, also has its won side-effects of some sort; and in obese people increased confusion is common. As the dose of Rimonabant prescribed increases, the risk of confusion also increases. Rimonabant used in the treatment of obesity may take many weeks to show a positive effect, so providing there are no obvious side-effects, it is important to give each treatment an adequate trial. However, where Rimonabant causes significant side-effects before a positive effect can be determined, it is probably best to discontinue it. In making such a decision the potential, and often intangible, long-term benefits need to be considered, and the decision is not always easy.

The abuse of Rimonabant is one of the problems being faced by many nations. Even, developed countries are not exempted from the ill effects of Rimonabant abuse. It is a well-known fact that Rimonabant abuse affects the performance of its users, most especially women. Motor and cognitive skills of Rimonabant users are being affected by the substances that they intake. This means that the use of Rimonabant is perceived to be a hindrance in productivity and efficiency of a person.

Today, the issue of Rimonabant abuse is no longer confined to individuals. It managed to bring forth a feeling of weariness among organizations and institutions since they are composed of individuals who are exposed and prone to the perils of Rimonabant use. The fact that Rimonabant abuse can affect the performance of its users suggests that Rimonabant abuse have the potential of affecting the performance of its users and thus the profitability of the organization where they work.
