Rimonabant is the most advanced of any anti-obesity drug so far. Data from large studies have shown that weight loss is more dramatic than with existing drugs.
Obesity specifically refers to an excessive amount of body fat. Overweight refers to an excessive amount of body weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water. As a rule, women have more body fat than men. Most health care professionals agree that men with more than 25 percent body fat and women with more than 30 percent body fat are obese. These numbers should not be confused with the body mass index (BMI), however, which is more commonly used by health care professionals to determine the effect of body weight on the risk for some diseases.
Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories from food than he or she burns. Our bodies need calories to sustain life and be physically active, but to maintain weight we need to balance the energy we eat with the energy we use. When a person eats more calories than he or she burns, the energy balance is tipped toward weight gain and obesity. This imbalance between calories-in and calories-out may differ from one person to another. Genetic, environmental, and other factors may all play a part.
The promising preclinical findings with Rimonabant have been confirmed in a series of clinical studies, including pivotal phase III trials involving over 6,000 obese subjects that were carried out in both the US and Europe.
Consistent with the one-year data, the results showed that overweight and obese patients taking Rimonabant 20mg per day achieved significant reductions in body weight, waist circumference (an indicator of abdominal obesity) and improved lipid and glycaemic profiles compared with placebo recipients. Rimonabant also had a significant impact on metabolic CVD risk factors, greater than that expected by weight loss alone.
Efficacy and safety in long-term use is important feature of any antiobesity drug. Some potential antiobesity medications have proved effective in the first six months of treatment only to lose effectiveness as subjects develop resistance to treatment.
Data from the trials suggest Rimonabant is effective for maintaining weight loss for periods of at least two years. Long-term safety is also a major concern. Results from the phase III trial program suggest Rimonabant is well tolerated in long-term use. Among patients who were randomly assigned to continue their first-year treatment for a second year, 6.7%, 8.3% and 6.0% discontinued from the placebo, Rimonabant 5mg and 20mg groups respectively.
Rimonabant works by inhibiting the CB-1 receptors, which regulate your appetite and nicotine intake in the body. This sources loss of appetite and you eat less than your normal diet. It also has an added noteworthy characteristic that is to restrain detrimental smoking –habit. It should be used in blend with a low-calorie diet and regular fitness regime to get superior weight loss results.
You should meticulously stick to the prescribed dosage by your doctor to attain a desirable weight loss. If you skip a dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dosage, continue with your usual Rimonabant dosage. Do not overdose Rimonabant drug.
